Alipay buys fund manager to boost online services | South China ...

The online payment affiliate of dominant mainland e-commerce company Alibaba is taking control of Tianhong Asset Management to accelerate its push into online financial services.

Tianhong shareholder Inner Mongolia Junzheng Energy & Chemical Industry yesterday said the investment of 1.18 billion yuan (HK$1.5 billion) gives Zhejiang Alibaba E-Commerce, the parent company of online payment company Alipay, 51 per cent of Tianhong.

Alipay and Tianhong launched a new fund and payment platform - called Yu E Bao, or "leftover treasure" in Chinese - in June to help Alipay customers convert spare cash into a money market fund holding.

In its first 18 days, the fund attracted more than 2.5 million customers and raised 6.6 billion yuan, according to Tianhong, and is expected to be one of the most successful mutual funds in the country this year.

Alibaba, which is expected to file for an initial public offering in New York next year that could value the company at more than US$100 billion, has been leading the drive by domestic internet companies into highly regulated financial services.

"Tianhong and Alibaba are mutually complementary," said Ding Xuemei, a spokeswoman for Tianhong.

"Alibaba is very experienced in the internet and we are very experienced in investment management. We partner up for a better prospect in internet finance."

Tianhong's management would not change, Ding said.

Alibaba bought its Tianhong stake through a fund-raising exercise that saw Tianhong's registered capital more than double to 514.3 million yuan from 180 million yuan.

"In order to give investors in Yu E Bao more security, improve innovation and provide more products and services, we have chosen to co-operate with Tianhong Asset Management," Alipay said on its official Sina Weibo microblog site.

Alipay is the mainland's biggest third-party payment platform, providing payment solutions to 460,000 merchants and with 800 million registered accounts.

Customers can invest as little as one yuan in the Yu E Bao service and can withdraw their money and return it to their Alipay accounts at any time.

Edward Snowden heads for asylum: Does the US have any options?

Faced with espionage charges, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden left Hong Kong Sunday for asylum, reportedly in South America. This could leave the US with few options as it tries to prosecute the man who leaked details about top secret surveillance programs.

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, aided by the WikiLeaks whistleblower organization, has left his hideout in Hong Kong and is hop-scotching his way to South America ? all of which has left US officials scrambling for recourse following their failure so far to bring Mr. Snowden back to the US for prosecution on charges of espionage.

"We will continue to discuss this matter with Hong Kong and pursue relevant law enforcement cooperation with other countries where Mr. Snowden may be attempting to travel," Justice Department spokeswoman Nanda Chitre said in a statement Sunday. Neither the White House nor Secretary of State John Kerry had any more to say on the subject by midday.

According to reports by Chinese and Russian news agencies, Mr. Snowden is traveling by commercial air ? first to Moscow, then to Havana, and finally to Caracas, Venezuela, where he is expected to be granted asylum.

?Mr. Edward Snowden, the American whistleblower who exposed evidence of a global surveillance regime conducted by US and UK intelligence agencies, has left Hong Kong legally,? WikiLeaks said in a statement Sunday. ?He is bound for a democratic nation via a safe route for the purposes of asylum, and is being escorted by diplomats and legal advisors from WikiLeaks.?

Meanwhile, as he was beginning the latest leg on his journey from relative obscurity to worldwide notoriety, the former NSA contractor was revealing more of what he says is a vast network of US surveillance of telephone and Internet information around the world.

In an interview piece published Sunday, the South China Morning Post quoted Snowden as saying the US government is hacking Chinese mobile phone companies to steal millions of text messages.

?There?s far more than this,? Snowden said, referring to his earlier claims that the US had targeted Hong Kong and mainland China. ?The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cell phone companies to steal all of your SMS data.?

It?s just the latest twist in a saga that began earlier this month when Snowden revealed himself as the former NSA analyst who?d exposed top secret US surveillance programs ? first to the Washington Post and the British newspaper the Guardian, then via a 12-minute video in which he declared, ?I don't want to live in a society that does these sort of things.?

Since then, he?s been praised as a heroic whistleblower by supporters and reviled as a traitor by critics and many US lawmakers eager to see him returned to this country for prosecution.

The situation had left President Obama in the tricky position of balancing national security in a post-9/11 world with the rights of privacy cherished by most Americans as well as Obama?s own calls for openness in government.

Development of nonvolatile liquid anthracenes for facile full-color luminescence tuning: Application to foldable light-emitting devices expected

June 23, 2013 ? A research team headed by Dr. Takashi Nakanishi, a Principal Researcher of the NIMS Organic Materials Group, Polymer Materials Unit, developed a full-colour tunable luminescent liquid material with excellent light stability based on an anthracene molecule, which is a general organic fluorescent dye.

A research team headed by Dr. Takashi Nakanishi, a Principal Researcher of the Organic Materials Group (Group Leader: Masayuki Takeuchi), Polymer Materials Unit (Unit Director: Izumi Ichinose) of the National Institute for Materials Science (President: Sukekatsu Ushioda), developed a full-colour tunable luminescent liquid material with excellent photostability based on anthracene, which is a general organic fluorescent dye.

In the development of full-colour display monitors, mobile devices, and other electronic devices, organic molecular and polymer materials are essentially important, as they offer advantages such as light weight, flexibility, and printability. However, in virtually all cases, the light-emitting organic molecular materials developed until now have had difficulties to demonstrate their inherent luminescent performance due to various problems, which include low photostability (durability to prevent discoloration or decolorization under photoirradiation) and aggregation of molecules in the coating process. Moreover, from the viewpoint of production of flexible devices, materials should be free of deterioration of the continuous emissive layer, even when subjected to excessive bending and folding. On the other hand, development of organic molecular materials which enable simple, low-cost manufacture of full-colour luminescence devices, in comparison with individual synthesis of organic molecular materials that display various luminescent colours, is also desired.

The team led by Dr. Nakanishi developed a blue-emitting liquid material which is free of aggregation among adjacent anthracene parts, has a melting point of approximately -60 ?C, and is thermally stable up to about 300 ?C, by attaching highly flexible branched alkyl chains around an anthracene core moiety, which is a fluorescent general dye molecule. This material is a low-viscosity liquid with viscosity of approximately 0.3 Pa-s at room temperature and is a blue-emitting with an absolute fluorescence quantum yield of ca. 55% and photostable more than 5~10 times longer lifetime than that of commercially-available anthracene dyes. Furthermore, because other luminescent dye molecules can be doped homogeneously in this liquid, it was found that full-colour luminescence tuning is available assisted by up to 96% fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) of dyes by single blue-light (365nm) excitation.

In this research, a blue-emitting anthracene liquid with excellent photostability was synthesized, and a liquid material which displays high quality full-colour luminescence and precise luminescence tuning by the facile operation of doping the liquid with other dyes was developed. Since the nonvolatile liquid material developed in this work can be coated on the surface of various substrates, production of organic multicolour devices with stable single color excitation can be expected. A continuous active emitting layer can be maintained, without breaking or interruption even when bent and folded, which is a favorable property for the development of foldable flexible devices.

Facebook Adds Like Button To Mobile Messages, A One-Touch ?OK?

Like Replies Short"Alright", "Yes", and the much-hated "k" just got a visual redesign. Facebook's iOS and Android apps have rolled out the option in messages to reply with a one-tap thumbs-up Like button sticker. It's a highly-functional flourish that replaces the greyed-out Send button when you haven't typed anything. And while it seems simple, I'm finding it quite satisfying.

As The Smart Calendar Market Heats Up, Calendo For iPhone Doesn't Want To Just Manage Your Calendar ? It Wants To Fill It

calendo2In recent months, the iOS App Store has filled with "smart" calendars like Sunrise, Tempo, and Cue, for example, but despite its name, a new Tel Aviv-based startup called Calendo isn't trying to directly compete with these types of applications. Instead of better managing your calendar for you, Calendo wants to help you fill it by making sure that you don't miss out on events you would have otherwise attended.
