The Hutchinson Builders Toowoomba International is in line to be named the best tennis tournament in Queensland in its inaugural year.

Judged a resounding success by organisers and players following the week-long tournament in February this year, the event has been nominated as a finalist in the 2012 Queensland Tennis Awards.

The Toowoomba tournament will vie for the top prize in its category against the Gold Coast Seniors tournament, the State Age championships and the Cairns Tennis International.

Winners in all categories will be announced in Brisbane on November 3.

Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism and Events portfolio leader Cr Geoff McDonald said the award nomination was an unexpected honour.

Cr McDonald said event organisers and volunteers deserved recognition for their efforts to stage an international-standard tournament at the Toowoomba Regional Tennis Centre ? USQ.

?To be named a finalist in the first year of operation is a great credit to the Toowoomba Tennis Association, Tennis Queensland, Tennis Australia and all sponsors who chipped in to make the event a success,? Cr McDonald said.

?The initial hard work has paid immediate dividends and Hutchinson Builders re-affirmed their major sponsorship earlier in the year.

?The complex was built to International Tennis Federation standards and lived up to its billing in February. The project was a joint effort between Council, the Toowoomba Tennis Association, USQ, the state government and Tennis Queensland.

?Ninety-six professional men?s tennis players entered the tournament in singles and doubles competition.?

Canadian top seed Erik Chvojka defeated second seed Ze Zhang of China 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Third seeds Brydan Klein and Dane Propoggia won the doubles title against fellow Australians Luke Saville and Andrew Whittington 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Tournament director Matt Richards earlier this year confirmed Toowoomba would host the Australian Pro Tour tournament for the next two years.

Tennis Australia is finalising the 2013 competition schedule.

The Hutchinson Builders Toowoomba International is proudly supported by Toowoomba Regional Council?s Sports Tourism Project. The Queensland Government provided Toowoomba Regional Council funding to employ a Sports Tourism Officer to get more Queenslanders active through sport and recreation.

Nuance has expanded on its predecessor's verbal commands, with new functionality for maps (you'll be able to bark direction requests at the new app and it'll plan the route), alongside a hands-free wake-up feature activated by saying "Hi Dragon" -- we hope you have a high embarrassment threshold. Other Siri-esque features include weather updates and dictated SMS and email responses. The beta app can be downloaded below, although compatibility is limited to Android Ice Cream Sandwich and above for now. Nuance is promising more features and increased availability later this year.

VMware suffers profit drop, steals Microsoft VP

VMware has reported a slight drop in third fiscal quarter 2012 income despite enjoying record revenue for the quarter.

At the same time, the cloud and virtualisation technology leader expects continued growth to come thanks to a couple of key acquisitions that it expects to help it be a leader in the development of software-defined data centers going forward.

VMware reported revenue for the third quarter of $US1.13 billion, up 20 percent from the $US942 million it reported for its third fiscal 2011 quarter.

Net income for the third quarter was $US157 million, compared to $US178 million for the third quarter of 2011

Revenue from license sales hit $US491 million for the quarter, up about 11 percent over last year, while services revenue rose about 29 percent during the same period to $US643 million.

Carl Eschenbach, chief operating officer and co-president of VMware, said a big feature of the third quarter was the $US1.2 billion VMware invested in acquiring software-defined networking (SDN) startup Nicira and its acquisition of DynamicOps, a developer of management software for provisioning apps and services across heterogeneous cloud infrastructures.

The idea of the software-defined data centre has emerged as the clear winner in terms of data center development going forward, Eschenbach said.

"The excitement around Nicira validates our approach to the software-defined data centre," he said.

For VMware, that spells growing strength for its vCloud Suite of software for building and managing a complete cloud infrastructure, as well as its Cloud Operations Services for helping customers transform their IT infrastructures into cloud infrastructures, Eschenbach said.

"The response to vCloud Suite and Cloud Ops from both partners and customers has been encouraging," he said.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said vCloud Suite is VMware's first implementation of the Nicira SDN technology, giving his company a big opportunity to expand its reach into customers' public, private and hybrid clouds.

"We are the company customers increasingly turn to for help for transforming their IT to the cloud," Gelsinger said.

New CFO, nicked from Microsoft

VMware also used the release of its third quarter 2012 financial results to unveil the hiring of Jonathan Chadwick as its new CFO. Chadwick, who will officially take the CFO spot on November 5, most recently served as corporate vice president of arch-rival Microsoft and CFO of Skype, which Microsoft acquired.

Chadwick will replace Mark Peek, VMware's former CFO, who left the company in June.

Chadwick brings a wealth of financial experience to virtualisation and cloud software developer VMware, including a stint at arch-rival Microsoft, where he most recently served as corporate vice president of Microsoft and CFO of Skype.

Prior to Microsoft, Chadwick was executive vice president and CFO at McAfee, and served a few different financial roles at Cisco Systems.

At VMware, Chadwick will report directly to CEO Pat Gelsinger, who in July took over that role from former CEO Paul Maritz.

Looking behind to vRAM, ahead to 2013

VMware's Eschenbach said VMware's ending of its short-lived vRAM licensing scheme and returning to its previous CPU-based licensing model was welcomed by both channel partners and customers.

Channel partners said the reinstatement of the CPU-based licensing model removed a big sales barrier in the third and fourth quarters of 2012, while customers prefer the CPU-based model because of the simplification versus the vRAM model, he said.

When asked about the potential threat to VMware by the expected release of System Centre 2012 by rival Microsoft, Eschenbach dismissed any concerns by saying that it has yet to reach the market and that the global economic environment is the main factor going forward.

"While Microsoft is coming to market with a new platform, it should be called out that this is the third time in seven years that Microsoft has come to market with a 'good enough' product," he said.

Looking forward, Eschenbach expects VMware's fourth quarter 2012 revenue of between $US1.26 billion and $US1.29 billion, or up between 19 percent and 22 percent over the fourth quarter of 2011. That includes a 14 percent to 18 percent rise in license revenue to between $US587 million and $US605 million.

For all of 2012, VMware is maintaining the midpoint of its previous guidance by calling for total revenue of $US4.57 billion to $4.6 billion, or up between 21.4 percent and 22.2 percent over 2011, Eschenbach said. Licensing revenue for 2012 is expected to be up from 12.8 percent to 13.8 percent over 2011 because of a seasonably strong fourth quarter, he said.

Surface isn't the only Windows RT tablet going on sale this week: Dell's XPS 10 ships on Friday, though it's actually for purchase now on Dell's site. (It won't ship until mid-December, so don't get too excited.) The tablet starts at $500 for the 32GB tablet by itself, which is right in line with Microsoft's Surface pricing. The 64GB model is priced at $600. Interested in that optional keyboard dock? (Of course you are!) Dell is selling two bundles: one with the 32GB tablet for $680, and another with the 64GB one for $780. Though the keyboard comes at a premium, especially compared to Microsoft's Touch Covers, it offers some things Microsoft doesn't -- namely, a USB port, HDMI output and a built-in battery. Whichever model you choose, the XPS 10 has a 10.1-inch screen with 1,366 x 768 resolution and a dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) ? A Russian spacecraft surged into clear skies over the Central Asian steppe Tuesday, carrying a three-man crew on their way to the International Space Station.

The engines of the Soyuz TMA-06M sent a powerful roar across the tinder-dry countryside of southern Kazakhstan as scheduled in the afternoon to deliver NASA astronaut Kevin Ford and Russians Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin to the orbiting laboratory.

"I spoke with the astronauts after they reached orbit," Russian Space Agency chief Vladimir Popovkin said. "They feel well. Everything went fine, despite the windy conditions."

After a two-day journey, the astronauts will join U.S. astronaut Sunita Williams, Russia's Yuri Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide of Japan's JAXA agency.

The crew will face what may be the heaviest workload in the 12-year history of the space station over its first week.

Tasks will include handling the departure of a Dragon cargo vehicle and a spacewalk to carry out repair operations on the station.

Of the three in Tuesday's takeoff, only Ford has flown in space before. He spent two weeks as pilot of the space shuttle Discovery in 2009 on a mission to transport scientific equipment to the space station.

Tuesday's launch took place in unseasonably warm conditions and afforded the small crowd of space officials, well-wishers and family members of the astronauts at the viewing platform a clear sight of the rocket disappearing into the distance.

Within a few seconds of the launch, the first set of booster rockets detached as planned in a puff of smoke and fell to earth leaving a streak of black fumes in its wake.

An announcer informed the crowd of the craft's progress over a loudspeaker. After nine minutes, he announced the Soyuz had reached orbit, prompting a burst of applause for the successful start to the mission.

Televised footage showed the soft toy hippopotamus mascot dangling over the crew floating in weightlessness.

The crew will be tightly packed into the cramped Soyuz for 48 hours before finally docking with the space station.

For the first time since 1984, the manned takeoff took place from the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome's launch site 31.

The pad that is normally used for such missions? the one where Yury Gagarin became the first human to travel into space in 1961, is being modernized. Site No. 1, better known as Gagarin's Start, was last overhauled in 1983.

The need for a back-up launch site became particularly acute with the decommissioning of the U.S. shuttle fleet in 2011, when Gagarin's Start became the only operating pad available for manned launches to the space station.

"We had no doubts that we could launch astronauts from here, but this has completely convinced us ... that from 2014 we will be sending people from the Gagarin Start," Popovkin said after congratulating space agency workers.

Manned launches from Baikonur take place about four times a year. Popovkin said launches of a modernized version of the craft that flew Tuesday, Soyuz-2, would begin from Gagarin Start in 2016.

Space officials have in recent weeks sought to address misgivings over billions of dollars spent to develop the International Space Station.

Ford said Monday that the bulk of the scientific benefits from the orbiting laboratory will be seen over the coming decade.

"The first 10 years were really intensive in the construction side of it, bringing all the pieces together and really getting the science enabled," Ford said.

Ford, who hails from Portland, Indiana, said the station would now enter its "utilization phase."

"We're going to learn the bulk of everything we know about the science that we're doing up there in the next decade," he said.

The growing capabilities of private space vehicle companies also have boosted hopes that NASA will be able to focus increasingly on more ambitious exploration projects.

Earlier this month, California-based SpaceX successfully delivered supplies to the space station on a craft called Dragon, the first official shipment under a $1.6 billion contract with NASA. It calls for 12 such shipments.

The Ford, Novitsky and Tarelkin stay on the station also will see the first ever arrival of "Cygnus," a commercial cargo vehicle from the Orbital Sciences Corp., of Dulles, Virginia, scheduled for December.

"These companies ... are themselves learning a lot about getting to and from low-earth orbit and picking up that task so that NASA can indeed begin to concentrate on things out of earth orbit and going out further into our solar system," Ford said.
