New online dating thread

Well, I'm sitting here drinking wine and chillin' out on a cold night so what the heck?

I won't do the online dating thing. But I live in a metropolitan area and have a lot of options. To me, online dating is just too much work and too much like shopping for a new car or something. I'll bet soon Amazon will have an online dating site. Suprised they don't already!

What I've done is get involved in Meetup.com but not specifically to meet someone..just to go out and have a good time. I figured that if happened to meet someone nice to go out and have a good time with then it would be icing on the cake but my primary objective it just to get out and socialize. I really enjoy the whole getting dressed up and going out scene.

But I DID meet someone with some interesting results and posted a bit about it on the other thread..so here's the conclusion:

But I think it's an example of what NOT to do if you have expressed interest in someone else:

I met this guy right after Christmas at a Meetup.com event. We hit it off quite well and talked until everyone else left. The next night we went to another event at a bar and danced and afterwards he walked me to my car and asked if he could date me. He seemed eager to see me and even asked about the next day.

I said I'd like to date him but had plans the next day but we'd see each other a few days later at New Years and was looking forward to it. I definitely gave him the impression that I was interested. I said "Sure" and we kissed each other goodnight. First time I'd kissed another man or expressed interest in one in 25 years!

A few days later we saw each other at a New Years Party. Had a good time, danced, kissed each other when the ball dropped. He told me he wasn't sure about his schedule with his kids (he has two kids ages, 10 and 12) but would be in touch about us getting together. I said "No problem, you let me know."

Week later I texted him to say "hi". We chatted a bit and he said he wanted to see me. I replied the same thing to him. He told me he'd let me know what his schedule was after he talked to his ex.

A few days later he emails me not to ask me out but to inform me that he will be at the same Meetup event that I signed up for that coming Saturday. I said "Ok, see you there" but am wondering about us actually going out.

The night of this event I get a text from him saying he's sick. I don't answer. It's not like we had an actual date or anything and sometimes the best reaction is no reaction. Ball is in his court now as far as I'm concerned.

Almost 10 days later, on Martin Luther King Day, I got an email from him that morning asking if I want to go to a movie. I was at work and didn't read it until that evening. I replied to his email. He then says he never saw the movie and would I like to go see it this coming Saturday? He said he'd get back to me "By the end of the week about what time".

I said "Sure"..and said that I was looking forward to it. I mentioned that I'd be away all day Friday and he should text or call if he needed an answer right away. No reply from him at all that week.

I came home last night (Friday) at 9:30pm. No email, text or call from him at all. Checked my email this morning at 10 am and nothing from him at all.

Then, TODAY at 11:30 am I get a text from him asking:

"How is your day looking?".

That's it. This is on the DAY of our supposed date, almost at noon.

My reply was:

"Well, originally I thought I had a date with this guy but I never heard from him so I made other plans"

His reply: "Sorry I meant to get to you yesterday"

My reply: "Oh well. BYE"

What a

What's ironic is that I don't much care about dating or meeting someone so I doubt he's going to get someone more laid back than me. Good luck to him out in the dating world cuz he's gonna need it.

No more 'angry white men'

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus. (Scott Olson/Getty Images)

CHARLOTTE, N.C.?Republican National Committee members gathered here to re-elect Chairman Reince Priebus for a second term. But by week's end, that vote seemed secondary to the question of the party's long-term survival.

After three months of denial, anger, despair and depression over the results of a bruising national election that gave Democrats an edge in Congress and kept President Barack Obama in the White House, Republicans know they must adapt if they are to move forward.

They acknowledge that it's time for a serious gut check (or, as Haley Barbour put it in November, a "proctology exam").

Whatever bodily metaphor you choose, the fact remains that the election so jolted and shocked the party that it is taking real steps to change.

And change it will! As soon as it figures out how.

While Republicans in Virginia and other battleground states launched an effort this week to alter Electoral College rules so that votes are doled out proportionately?which would likely give the GOP at least a short-term edge?GOP leaders here discussed their party's own shortcomings and sought areas of internal improvement.

Almost every conversation in the bar of the Charlotte Westin Hotel this week involved a discussion about what the party must do to win the next elections. Floating through the air is a desire to recapture glorious days of the past, a challenge made difficult by a country that refuses to stand still. Demographics are changing, minorities are growing in political influence and views on social issues like gay marriage are drifting rapidly leftward. Something's got to give.

Bring in the Bobs

Enter the RNC's five-person "Growth and Opportunity" committee, an ethnically diverse cadre of political veterans and RNC members analyzing what the party must to do avoid another 2012-like drubbing. (Think of them as The Bobs from "Office Space," but with American flag lapel pins.)

The group includes Henry Barbour, a Mississippi committeeman and Haley Barbour's nephew; former George W. Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer; Florida strategist Sally Bradshaw; South Carolina committeeman Glenn McCall and Puerto Rico committeewoman Zori Fonalledas. They will submit a detailed report in March that looks back on the 2012 election and forward to 2014 and 2016.

"You're going to see a very renewed aggressive effort by this party to put on a different face," Bradshaw said on Thursday. "We've got to find a way to take our message to more people and get more votes. It's not a particularly complicated formula. We got beat; we have to change what we're doing."

The report is a work in progress, and only part of it will be made public, but The Bobs delivered an update on their findings on Thursday to the RNC members.

First, they said Republicans must work on improving their tone when taking their ideas to the American people. For example, when discussing immigration, maybe presidential candidates should avoid phrases like "self-deportation" (Mitt Romney) and "anchor babies" (Michele Bachmann).

Henry Barbour said some in the party can appear "hostile" to certain constituencies with the rhetoric they use. The party must increase communication training for candidates, he said.

"There are certainly too many times when we've had candidates who have come across as hostile, and that's not really helpful when you're trying to win elections," Barbour said.

Robert Bennett, chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, was even more blunt.

"We need to understand that we can't come off as a bunch of angry white men," he said.

Minority 'engagement' a top priority

Making an honest effort to engage minorities was above anything else the main, yet unofficial, focus of party leaders this week.

On Thursday, committee members took part in a closed-door panel discussion on minority engagement. Edward Cousar, a black committeeman from South Carolina who sat on the panel, said white Republicans struggle in part because they spend too much time with other white Republicans. They have little idea how to speak or interact in a way that appears welcoming to outsiders who come from different ethnic and social backgrounds.

"People get set in their ways, and maybe they don't have a diverse set of friends and they say things," Cousar told Yahoo News in an interview before the panel. "It's not that they're being racist. They just don't know."

Cousar, who leads the Black Republican Political Action Committee, pointed to past Republican efforts to suppress early voting?"shameful," he said?and Romney's writing off of 47 percent of the country as unwinnable.

"I always thought Romney had better policies," Cousar, who is the only Republican in his family, said, comparing Romney and Obama. "But he was a horrible messenger."

In November, Obama won more than 70 percent of the Hispanic vote and more than 95 percent of black voters supported him. Single women also fled the Republican party on Election Day, with about two-thirds supporting the Democrat. It's a serious problem for Republicans, one they admit will take a lot of time to overcome.

"It's not going to happen overnight," said McCall, a black member of the study group. "But it can be done, and we're going to make that effort."

No more witches

Part of that effort relies heavily on recruiting quality candidates, many attendees said.

For the past four years, Republicans have faced a series of disappointing setbacks after mediocre candidates?often tea party favorites?have gone on to lose very winnable elections.

They include Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin, who lost a Missouri Senate race last year and forced Romney and other Republicans on the defensive over women's issues.

In 2010, Nevada's Sharron "Second Amendment Remedies" Angle and Delaware's Christine "I'm Not A Witch" O'Donnell lost Senate races Republicans had been expected to win.

The party hopes to take steps to avoid such catastrophes.

Republicans say if that means supporting a moderate candidate who can actually win over a hardline conservative who doesn't stand a chance, so be it. (You may have noticed that among the names that make up The Bobs, there isn't anyone who might be considered a "tea party leader.")

"If we're not nominating candidates that can win in the general election, what business are we in?" Barbour said. "We are in the business of winning elections."

There is one thing, however, that no one?not the committee members, elected officials or even The Bobs?seem interested in addressing, and that's whether core Republican ideas need to change.

Most here said they don't.

"The conservative message sells," said Saul Anuzis, the former chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. "We're on the right side of history, on the right side of the issues. We just haven't done a very good job on articulating the issues."

Anuzis' analysis is pretty universal in Republican circles. They see the true cause of their problems as merely poor presentations of otherwise good ideas.

That means a tricky rhetorical sleight of hand.

Don't believe women should have access to an abortion if they are raped or victims of incest? Try not to talk about it. Think the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes are "takers"? Please don't quote Ayn Rand in your stump speech. Support laws banning gay couples from legal rights guaranteed to straight couples? Keep it in the closet. And remember, when in doubt, pivot and talk about economic growth.

Barbour admitted his committee wasn't brought in to debate or change those policy ideas. Their task, he said, is to put Republicans on a path to win election?not a squishy exercise in lazy pontificating or a dorm room bull session about the proper role of government.

It's data driven.

It's going to hurt some feelings.

And most of all, it's damn serious.

"We did get whipped in the presidential election," Barbour said. "That's not something we take lightly."

HBT: Griffey Jr. going into Mariners HOF

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times has the story:

It was only a matter of time, of course, but now it?s official:?Ken Griffey Jr.?will be inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame, it was announced today. The induction ceremony will take place at Safeco Field on Saturday, Aug. 10, prior to a game with the Brewers. Junior will join former teammates?Alvin Davis, Jay Buhner, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson?and?Dan Wilson, along with late announcer?Dave Niehaus, with whom Griffey had a close relationship.

Griffey was selected first overall by the Mariners in the 1987 MLB Amateur Draft then went on to bat .292/.374/.553 with 1,843 hits, 417 home runs, 1,216 RBI and 167 stolen bases in his 13 years with the club.

?It means a lot,? Griffey told reporters Tuesday during a conference call. ?It?s something you dream about. It?s the organization you get drafted by, the celebration of your career. It means a whole lot they?d think that highly of me and what I?ve done to be able to have my name up there with the rest of the guys.?

The M?s are sure to retire Griffey?s number (24) once he is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

As much chatter as there will be about the players involved ? from Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and his impending retirement to 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's sudden emergence ? the sibling angle will make this coaching matchup the most scrutinized in the nearly half-century of Super Sundays.

On Thanksgiving Day, 2011, the Harbaughs became the first brothers to coach against each other in any NFL game. Now they'll be squaring off in the biggest one of all.

The 49ers open as 5-point favorites.

As the son of a military officer, it seems as if Edgar Ramirez was destined for his latest role in Zero Dark Thirty. Boeing?s 787 woes test company?s reputation

    13 hrs.

Boeing's new-model 787 is receiving plenty of attention lately - but it's not at all the kind of buzz the aircraft maker had been hoping for with?an aircraft that carries such high hopes it was dubbed the "Dreamliner."

??Welcome to the age of social media, Boeing,? quipped Michel Merluzeau, managing partner with G2 Solutions and a longtime aviation analyst.

The FAA on Wednesday ordered that all new model 787 planes operating in the United States temporarily cease operations?until the FAA is sure that the batteries used in the new airplane are safe. Although the FAA commonly issues airworthiness directives to deal with specific problems, experts say it's rare that the agency takes the extra step of ordering airplanes to stop operating pending a check.

?This is really a very unusual step,? Merluzeau said.

The action came after two serious issues involving the airplanes? batteries raised concerns about fires?inside?the?aircraft. It also follows?a series of other mishaps?in the?past few months that earlier had prompted a broader FAA review of the aircraft model. No one has been hurt in the incidents.

Aviation experts maintain that brand-new airplane models like the 787 are bound to have some growing pains, and most?still believe the airplane will be a success in the long-term. But some?say that the images of firefighters surrounding the aircraft and passengers bouncing off emergency slides are bound to raise alarm bells with some flyers.?

??The aviation community recognizes that Boeing will eventually fix the 787 and anticipate it to be a fine airplane, eventually,? Scott Hamilton, an aviation industry consultant with Leeham and Co., said in an e-mail Thursday. ?The flying public won't be so forgiving in the near-term.?

Even among the aviation community, some say that there could eventually be a limit?to how long customers and industry watchers will be forgiving.

?Boeing is kind of running out of (opportunities) to argue that this is a normal teething issue,? Merluzeau said.

Analysts said the company could likely overcome the current threats to the airplane model's reputation if it can address the issues quickly. That's because most flyers don't pay attention to what airplane they are getting on, as long as they are getting a good price for their ticket.

"You're either afraid of flying or you're not - that's basically what it comes down to," said Richard Aboulafia,?vice president of analysis with Teal Group.

Nevertheless, Aboulafia said that Boeing had likely hoped at this time to be raising excitement and buzz around being the first to fly the 787, rather than responding to FAA directives. Boeing also?has touted the 787 as a superior passenger experience because of bigger windows, better lighting and a more humid cabin.

Slideshow: Take a look inside the Boeing 787 'Dreamliner'

"This is?a kind of buzz wave that manufacturers like to catch upfront," Aboulafia?said.

The 787, which entered service in the fall of 2011, is groundbreaking because it is made largely of light composite materials instead of aluminum, and it relies largely on electric systems instead of hydraulics.

Aviation experts say the 787?s systems mark major technological advancements for aviation, but using such a large number of new technologies also is risky.

Boeing delivered the first 787 more than three years late, in part because of difficulties working with a vast web of suppliers who designed and built key components for the new aircraft. Hamilton, of Leeham, said the distraction of the 787?s woes also have kept the aircraft maker from moving forward with other new airplane designs as quickly as many would like. That could be competitive problem for them down the road.

Boeing has received 848 orders for the 787. It has delivered 49 of the aircraft, according to the aircraft maker?s website.

United Airlines is the only U.S. carrier that is currently operating the 787. The carrier said in a statement Wednesday that it was working with?the FAA and Boeing toward restoring service and would accommodate customers on other airplanes in the interim.

Boeing Chief Executive Jim McNerney said in a statement Wednesday that the company was working around the clock to address the issues.

"We are confident the 787 is safe and we stand behind its overall integrity,? McNerney said in the statement.

Will Obama's order lead to surge in gun research?

(AP) ? Nearly as many Americans die from guns as from car crashes each year. We know plenty about the second problem and far less about the first. A scarcity of research on how to prevent gun violence has left policymakers shooting in the dark as they craft gun control measures without much evidence of what works.

That could change with President Barack Obama's order Wednesday to ease research restrictions pushed through long ago by the gun lobby. The White House declared that a 1996 law banning use of money to "advocate or promote gun control" should not keep the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal agencies from doing any work on the topic.

Obama can only do so much, though. Several experts say Congress will have to be on board before anything much changes, especially when it comes to spending money.

How severely have the restrictions affected the CDC?

Its website's A-to-Z list of health topics, which includes such obscure ones as Rift Valley fever, does not include guns or firearms. Searching the site for "guns" brings up dozens of reports on nail gun and BB gun injuries.

The restrictions have done damage "without a doubt" and the CDC has been "overly cautious" about interpreting them, said Daniel Webster, director of the Center for Gun Policy and Research at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

"The law is so vague it puts a virtual freeze on gun violence research," said a statement from Michael Halpern of the Union of Concerned Scientists. "It's like censorship: When people don't know what's prohibited, they assume everything is prohibited."

Many have called for a public health approach to gun violence like the highway safety measures, product changes and driving laws that slashed deaths from car crashes decades ago even as the number of vehicles on the road rose.

"The answer wasn't taking away cars," said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association.

However, while much is known about vehicles and victims in crashes, similar details are lacking about gun violence.

    Some unknowns:

?How many people own firearms in various cities and what types.

?What states have the highest proportion of gun ownership.

?Whether gun ownership correlates with homicide rates in a city.

?How many guns used in homicides were bought legally.

?Where juveniles involved in gun fatalities got their weapons.

?What factors contribute to mass shootings like the Newtown, Conn., one that killed 26 people at a school.

"If an airplane crashed today with 20 children and 6 adults there would be a full-scale investigation of the causes and it would be linked to previous research," said Dr. Stephen Hargarten, director of the Injury Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

"There's no such system that's comparable to that" for gun violence, he said.

One reason is changes pushed by the National Rifle Association and its allies in 1996, a few years after a major study showed that people who lived in homes with firearms were more likely to be homicide or suicide victims. A rule tacked onto appropriations for the Department of Health and Human Services barred use of funds for "the advocacy or promotion of gun control."

Also, at the gun group's urging, U.S. Rep. Jay Dickey, a Republican from Arkansas, led an effort to remove $2.6 million from the CDC's injury prevention center, which had led most of the research on guns. The money was later restored but earmarked for brain injury research.

"What the NRA did was basically terrorize the research community and terrorize the CDC," said Dr. Mark Rosenberg, who headed the CDC's injury center at the time. "They went after the researchers, they went after institutions, they went after CDC in a very big way, and they went after me," he said. "They didn't want the data to be collected because they were threatened by what the data were showing."

Dickey, who is now retired, said Wednesday that his real concern was the researcher who led that gun ownership study, who Dickey described as being "in his own kingdom or fiefdom" and believing guns are bad.

He and Rosenberg said they have modified their views over time and now both agree that research is needed. They put out a joint statement Wednesday urging research that prevents firearm injuries while also protecting the rights "of legitimate gun owners."

"We ought to research the whole environment, both sides ? what the benefits of having guns are and what are the benefits of not having guns," Dickey said. "We should study any part of this problem," including whether armed guards at schools would help, as the National Rifle Association has suggested.

Association officials did not respond to requests for comment. A statement Wednesday said the group "has led efforts to promote safety and responsible gun ownership" and that "attacking firearms" is not the answer. It said nothing about research.

The 1996 law "had a chilling effect. It basically brought the field of firearm-related research to a screeching halt," said Benjamin of the Public Health Association.

Webster said researchers like him had to "partition" themselves so whatever small money they received from the CDC was not used for anything that could be construed as gun policy. One example was a grant he received to evaluate a community-based program to reduce street gun violence in Baltimore, modeled after a successful program in Chicago called CeaseFire. He had to make sure the work included nothing that could be interpreted as gun control research, even though other privately funded research might.

Private funds from foundations have come nowhere near to filling the gap from lack of federal funding, Hargarten said. He and more than 100 other doctors and scientists recently sent Vice President Joe Biden a letter urging more research, saying the lack of it was compounding "the tragedy of gun violence."

Since 1973, the government has awarded 89 grants to study rabies, of which there were 65 cases; 212 grants for cholera, with 400 cases, yet only three grants for firearm injuries that topped 3 million, they wrote. The CDC spends just about $100,000 a year out of its multibillion-dollar budget on firearm-related research, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said.

"It's so out of proportion to the burden, however you measure it," said Dr. Matthew Miller, associate professor of health policy at the Harvard School of Public Health. As a result, "we don't know really simple things," such as whether tighter gun rules in New York will curb gun trafficking "or is some other pipeline going to open up" in another state, he said.

    What now?

CDC officials refused to discuss the topic on the record ? a possible sign of how gun shy of the issue the agency has been even after the president's order.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement that her agency is "committed to re-engaging gun violence research."

Others are more cautious. The Union of Concerned Scientists said the White House's view that the law does not ban gun research is helpful, but not enough to clarify the situation for scientists, and that congressional action is needed.

    Dickey, the former congressman, agreed.

"Congress is supposed to do that. He's not supposed to do that," Dickey said of Obama's order. "The restrictions were placed there by Congress.

"What I was hoping for ... is 'let's do this together,'" Dickey said.

Choice of Business Entity for Bloggers - Blogging Tips

Blogging and BusinessIf you run your blog as a business, one of the important decisions you must make early on deals with choice of entity.? This is an important business decision for any business, not just bloggers, and it can affect how you are taxed and also your legal liability.

As a CPA, I do a lot of (legal) tax planning with my clients so that they can keep more of their hard earned money in their own pocket.? When I meet with people who are going to start a business or who have recently started a business, choice of entity is one of the most important issues that we discuss.

Although I am specifically referring to U.S. entities, some of the concepts discussed will also likely apply to entities in foreign jurisdictions as well.

I list below 5 of the most common business entities that you might consider for your blog.

    1. Sole Proprietorship

A sole proprietorship consists of an individual who runs an unincorporated trade or business.? This appears to be the form of entity most commonly used by bloggers.

A sole proprietorship is the easiest type of business to set up and manage.? Sole proprietors don?t have to file a separate entity tax return for federal income tax purposes, which may help minimize professional fees.

The big downside of using a sole proprietorship is that there is unlimited liability for all business actions and debts.? Having limited liability could sure come in handy if you were ever sued. One way to minimize liability while keeping the tax simplicity of a sole proprietorship is to form a single member LLC, which is discussed below.

    1. C Corporation

A C Corporation is an incorporated business entity with a legal status separate from that of its owners.? A shareholder?s liability is generally limited to his or her investment in the corporation.? Another advantage of a C Corporation is that it can raise capital by issuing stock.

The big disadvantage of a C Corporation is that it is subject to double taxation.? For federal income tax purposes, the corporation files Form 1120 and pays tax on company profits.? Any dividends paid to shareholders are also taxable to the shareholder, resulting in 2 layers of tax.

Many businesses today, including blogs, choose not to operate as a C Corporation because of the double taxation issue.? There are other legal entities that provide limited liability without subjecting the company and owners to double taxation.? Additionally, C Corporations tend to have high compliance and administrative burdens.

    1. S Corporation

Similar to a C Corporation, an S Corporation is an incorporated business entity with a legal status separate from that of its owners.? A shareholder?s liability is generally limited to his or her investment in the corporation.

However, for tax purposes, an S Corporation is treated as a pass through entity.? This means that there is generally no entity level tax (although there are exceptions), and all profits and losses flow through to the shareholders to be taxed at the shareholder level.? Shareholders are taxed on earnings even if no distributions are actually made.? Form 1120S is the federal income tax return filed for an S Corporation.

Unlike many other types of entities, there are very strict limitations and restrictions on the number of shareholders allowed, as well as on who can be a shareholder of an S Corporation.? If you violate these rules, you could lose your S Corp status, which could have disastrous consequences.

    1. Limited Liability Company

LLCs are hybrid entities that offer the legal protection of a corporation but the option to be taxed as a pass through entity (i.e. partnership or disregarded entity), meaning there is no double taxation.? The owners of an LLC are called ?members.?

If an LLC has more than one member, it is generally taxed as a partnership.? If it only has one member, it is generally disregarded for federal income tax purposes (but not legal purposes) and taxed as a sole proprietorship.? Income is generally taxed directly to the member or members regardless of distributions.

    1. Partnership

A partnership is another type of pass through entity that has 2 or more owners.? There is no federal partnership level tax and all income flows through to the respective partners to be taxed at the partner level, regardless of what distributions have been made.? A partnership generally files Form 1065 for federal income tax purposes.

A general partner is generally liable for all partnership debt, whereas a limited partner?s liability is generally limited to his or her investment in the partnership.? There are a number of different types of partnerships.

Sole Proprietorships vs Single Member LLCs

If you run your blog as a business, you should consider an appropriate type of entity for your blog.? For blogs with only one owner, sole proprietorships and single member LLCs tend to be very common choices.

In general, a sole proprietorship is the most simple and least expensive type of entity.? It is very easy to create and terminate, but the owner generally has unlimited liability for all business actions and debts.

A sole proprietorship may be most appropriate where there is little risk associated with the business (or any risk may be hedged against with insurance), the business is just getting started, and profits are low or nonexistent.? It may not be the best choice if the nature of the business is hazardous.

Many businesses start as sole proprietorships, but then convert to an LLC or other type of entity later on once they have grown or their needs have changed.

A single member LLC may be a little more burdensome to set up and maintain, but it generally provides much more legal protection than a sole proprietorship.

Neither has the disadvantage of double taxation or requires the filing of a separate federal income tax return.

Disclaimer:? The above article is provided for informational purposes only and should not be interpreted as professional financial, legal, or tax advice.? The issues involved in choosing an appropriate business entity are complex and this article by no means captures all of them.? Additionally, certain laws vary from state to state, so it?s important to obtain appropriate legal and tax advice for your specific situation.

    Cuba acknowledges 51 cholera cases

HAVANA (AP) ? Cuba's Public Health Ministry on Tuesday acknowledged 51 new cases of cholera in the capital amid growing concerns about the illness' spread and disappointment in the diplomatic community over the government's lack of transparency.

The ministry said nobody had died from the latest outbreak, which began Jan. 6, and stressed that preventive measures already taken had put the disease "on the way to extinction." It said cholera was first detected in the capital's Cerro neighborhood, and then spread elsewhere. No other areas of the capital were mentioned, but there have been reports of cases in the leafy Playa neighborhood that is home to many foreign embassies.

The government has not responded to repeated requests for comment in recent months, nor has it made any experts available to talk about the cholera situation. The family of one man, 46-year-old Ubaldo Pino Rodriguez, told The Associated Press last week that he died of cholera in Cerro on Jan. 2, about two weeks after going to the hospital with severe vomiting.

Rodriguez's sister, Yanise Pino, said her brother had a drinking problem and lived in squalid and unhygienic conditions in a tiny makeshift wooden dwelling.

"When he began to feel bad he thought it was from drinking and nothing else," she said, adding that he left the hospital of his own accord last month. She said that following his death authorities sealed off Ubaldo's room and told her to burn all his belongings.

Juan Bautista Ferrera, a retiree in Havana's Miramar neighborhood, told AP that he was hospitalized with cholera for five days last week after suffering severe diarrhea.

"I was isolated in a room and nobody could come to see me. I communicated with my wife by phone," he said, adding he never worried about his life. "I'm 75 years old and I don't fear anything. The medical attention was very good so I never thought for a minute I could die of it."

Ferrera's wife, Caridad Neyes, said health workers gave them chlorine to clean their home and also handed out medicine. She said several restaurants in the neighborhood were closed but have since reopened.

Cholera is a waterborne disease caused by a bacteria found in tainted water or food. It can kill within hours through dehydration, but is treatable if caught in time. Cholera is unusual in Cuba. But recent outbreaks in nearby Haiti have killed more than 7,200 people.

It was unclear why a new outbreak was being seen in Havana. Rains, which can help spread the disease, are common in January, but the weather has been unusually dry this year.

In August, Cuba announced that a cholera outbreak had run its course after sickening 417 people and leaving three dead. That outbreak originated in the eastern city of Manzanillo, in Granma province. Some have speculated the epidemic gained new life following the widespread devastation caused in October by Hurricane Sandy, which damaged more than 200,000 homes in eastern Cuba.

Several European diplomats have told AP they are considering issuing travel advisories to citizens planning visits to Cuba, and have been concerned that the government is not sharing information with them in a timely manner. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Tourism is the top sector in Cuba's flagging Communist economy, with 2.8 million visitors a year and about $2.5 billion in annual revenue. A major cholera outbreak is sure to make some visitors think twice about a trip, despite Cuba's sterling reputation in responding to epidemics and natural disasters.

The island has a well-organized civil defense system capable of rapidly mobilizing government agencies and citizens groups. Brigades of workers go door to door, noisily fumigating homes and admonishing residents to eliminate standing water where mosquitos bearing another tropical disease, dengue, could breed.

American tourists are barred from visiting Cuba due to the half-century old economic embargo, but 400,000 Cuban-Americans come down each year for family visits, and about 100,000 others get licenses to come on cultural or other exchanges. There have been no reports so far of any tourists coming down with the illness.

Tuesday's Public Health Ministry statement ? carried in the Communist Party newspaper Granma and elsewhere ? made no mention of any cholera cases reported outside Havana.

While Cuba's state-run media had been largely silent about cholera before Tuesday, there has been an intensified campaign against water-borne diarrhetic illnesses, of which cholera is one. Several health centers in the capital require visitors to sanitize their shoes by stepping in chlorine when they enter, and state schools have been stressing hand-washing and other hygiene measures.

While some have voiced nervousness over the outbreak, many said they were confident the government had a strong handle on the outbreak.

Beatriz Guerra, a 26-year-old mother of two who lives in Miramar, said a state-run school attended by her eldest son was closed briefly last week to clean and disinfect the rooms and furniture. She said residents had been advised at neighborhood meetings to take precautions and be particularly vigilant of what their children were touching and putting in their mouth.

"I know that they are taking the necessary measures," she said. "One just needs to be very cautious."

PBS CEO says Elmo bigger than his puppeteer, talks "Downton" scheduling

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - PBS CEO Paula Kerger says "Sesame Street" will weather the scandal over Elmo puppeter Kevin Clash because "the character of Elmo is larger than any one individual."

She also said a new puppeteer may not be named because several puppeteers are able to work with the beloved "Sesame Street" character. Clash resigned from handling Elmo in November amid allegations that Clash had sexual relationships with underage teenage boys.

Kerger also spoke at a Television Critics Association panel Monday about Mitt Romney's Big Bird moment during the presidential debates, and why PBS doesn't air "Downton Abbey" in sync with the show's British airing.

Airing "Downton" in the fall overseas and in January in the U.S. means American fans of the show need to shield themselves from hearing about major plot developments. But it has its advantages, including the "enormous generation of publicity" that "Downton" receives in January, which it might not receive in the crowded fall season. The show's third season had a huge U.S. debut this month, scoring 7.9 million viewers.

"You have encouraged us often that everyone puts their most competitive work on in the fall," Kerger said, referring to TV critics, "and to put 'Downton' in the teeth of that I'm not sure serves anyone well."

Kerger said the issue of when to air "Downton" is a "question of great debate" and that PBS hopes to air the show when it will best satisfy viewers.

She also talked about her shock when Romney said that he wanted to cut PBS funding despite his personal fondness for its programming and love of Big Bird. She said she saw it as an opportunity to tell the public about how PBS is funded.

She also talked about her shock when Romney said that he wanted to cut PBS's federal funding despite his personal fondness for its programming and love of Big Bird. "I almost fell off my couch," she said, echoing earlier comments about her shock at PBS becoming part of the debate.

But she said she saw it as an opportunity to tell the public - and Congress - about how PBS is funded. "It was an opportunity to try to explain to a much wider audience and to the American people and to those on the Hill who we are," she said. She explained that while PBS gets 15 percent of its funding from the federal government, it goes directly to local stations, many of which rely on it to exist. Without federal funding, roughly a third of PBS stations would go dark, she said.

And just like that, we're through. It feels like just yesterday I was sitting down to write the introduction to a CES column for our first special issue of Distro from the show floor, and now, well, it's over. The show was different this year, but not necessarily in the way we expected. While the show felt smaller in a lot of ways, in many others it was even bigger.

Some big companies like Microsoft and RIM opted to have minimal or no presence on the show floor, so we thought that would shrink the overall content at CES. Oh no, dear readers, if anything it had quite the opposite effect. Those big voids that were created were filled by dozens of smaller companies, crowd-funded and fresh-thinking, lobbing plenty of innovative products our way. Some were crap, but lots and lots were awesome and mind-blowing in their simplicity and genius.

An assault weapons ban may be out of Obama's reach

Jason Zielinski shows a customer an AR-15 style rifle at Freddie Bear Sports sporting goods store. (Scott Olson/Getty??

Vice President Joe Biden announced Thursday that he will recommend new gun control measures to President Barack Obama, which include more comprehensive background checks on gun buyers and limits on the sizes of ammunition magazines. The proposal could lead to the most significant move on guns in 20 years, but one regulation highly coveted by gun control advocates seems to be notably missing: a ban on assault weapons.

In 1994, President Bill Clinton managed to push through a sweeping ban on certain kinds of semi-automatic weapons, dealing a crushing blow to the National Rifle Association and other gun lobbyists and sparking a political backlash that helped Republicans reclaim the House and Senate for the first time in 50 years.

That ban, which expired 10 years later in 2004, is still seen as the gold standard by many gun control advocates, who have been fighting in vain to get it reinstated?with some modifications?for years. Since the horrific Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 first graders dead and sparked a national conversation about the nation's gun violence problem, many advocates think they see their chance.

"It is time to pass an enforceable and effective assault weapons ban," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the leading gun control advocate in the nation, said in a press conference after the shooting. Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill quickly introduced legislation to ban the weapons in late December.

But Biden's omission of the ban from his description of his package of proposals on Thursday suggests an assault weapons ban could be out of reach. (It's still possible that the ban could be included in his final proposal, which will be announced Tuesday.) A lot has changed since 1994?including public opinion, the legal landscape and the political might of the NRA.

"I don't think a ban on assault weapons?which is a ban on some of the most popular rifles in America?is likely to get support," said Adam Winkler, a UCLA law professor and Second Amendment expert. "The 1994 ban was widely recognized to be ineffective and to be riddled with loopholes."

Because the Clinton-era ban focused on cosmetic features of semi-automatic weapons?such as whether the weapon had bayonet slugs?manufacturers could easily remove those features and produce legal guns that were functionally identical to the banned weapons. These loopholes gave the ban a bad rap, making it ineffective on top of being politically toxic.

Another change since the 90s-era ban is that many semi-automatic weapons are more popular now, including the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle used in the Newtown shooting, which is one of the best selling rifles in America. There are at least 3 million AR-15-type rifles in America today, and semi-automatic handguns have overtaken revolvers as the most popular handguns. (Gun ownership on the whole, however, is down since 1994.)

Meanwhile, public opinion on gun control shifted as violent crime started falling in the late 90s. Starting in about 2000, fewer and fewer Americans expressed interest in stricter gun control laws: 78 percent favored stricter gun laws in 1990 compared to only 44 percent between 2010 and 2012.

The majority of Americans would not favor the banning of certain kinds of weapons altogether, such as the assault weapons ban. In 2001, 59 percent of Americans favored that ban, but now the number has dropped to 44 percent.

Some of this public opinion shift may be due to the efforts of the NRA, which has grown more powerful since its defeat in the 90s. "The NRA has about a million more members than it did before and it's got 20 more years' experience on the issue," said David Kopel, an adjunct law professor at New York University and research director at the conservative think tank the Independence Institute.

The NRA told Politico that it has gained 100,000 new members since the Newtown shooting.

Even if gun control advocates were able to pass an assault weapons ban, it would most certainly face a legal challenge.

In a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision, a majority of justices ruled that the government cannot ban an entire class of weapons (in this case, handguns) that are commonly used by law abiding gun owners for legitimate reasons, such as self defense. The government could argue that semi-automatic weapons are not commonly used for self defense, but it's still unclear how the Supreme Court might rule.

The news isn't all gloomy for the gun control side, though. If Obama is able to limit magazine sizes or expand gun background checks, it will still represent one of the biggest gun control victories in decades, and a huge departure from the near political silence on the issue over the past few years. And there's some evidence that the public would be more supportive of such a move since the shooting re-ignited the debate. A Gallup poll taken a week after the Newtown shooting found that 58 percent of Americans wanted gun laws to be stricter, a big jump from the 44 percent who said the same when polled a few months earlier.

And the proposals that Biden said he will present to the president have broad public support. A majority of Americans support requiring background checks for all gun buyers, which would happen if Congress closes the current gun show loophole that allows about 40 percent of firearms to be sold without a background check. Most people also said they would support banning ammunition magazines that carry more than 10 bullets.

Iraq threatens to seize oil shipments, sue dealers

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraq is threatening to seize oil exports made without its consent and sue companies dealing in what it sees as contraband crude just days after the country's self-rule Kurdish region began unilaterally exporting oil.

A spokesman for Iraq's Kurdish region confirmed Friday that the largely autonomous territory has begun shipping oil to Turkey in the past few days. Safeen Dizayee declined to say how much was being hauled into Turkey by truck, but said it is "more than a few tankers a day."

The move appears to have triggered Baghdad's threat. A statement quietly posted Thursday on the website of the State Oil Marketing Organization warns that Iraq may confiscate what it sees as contraband oil cargoes and sue sellers, buyers and companies that transport the crude.

Olympic fencing champ Vezzali joins Monti's ticket : Sports ...

Read?more: Sports, Olympics, Valentine Vezzali, Rio Olympics, Vezzali, Fencing

ROME (AP) -- Six-time Olympic fencing champion Valentina Vezzali has announced she is running on Italian Premier Mario Monti's ticket in the national elections next month.

While insisting she will continue competing through to the 2016 Rio Olympics, Vezzali says she's joining Monti's team as a candidate for parliament because she "really believes he can do something to improve Italy's current state."

Vezzali met Monti for the first time in April when the premier presided over an awards ceremony at the Italian Olympic Committee.

The 38-year-old Vezzali has three individual golds and three team titles at five Olympics, winning nine medals overall. She is pregnant with her second child.

Monti says that "to show Italy can win you need to rely on people that win."

Elections are scheduled for Feb. 24-25.

PC Pancake: Razer's Edge Is A Gaming PC In Tablet Form | Rock ...

By Craig Pearson on January 9th, 2013 at 6:00 pm.

    Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!Phabusl8te!
Did you know that there?s a term for a device that?s between a phone and a tablet? In one on the worst portmanteaus of our time, they?re called ?phablets?. That is gloriously awful, and I applaud every ugly syllable of it. The new Razer PC gaming tablet, the existence of which was announced last year as ?Project Fiona?, isn?t a phablet, but I can?t see why we can?t come up with a new term for it. After all, it?s a Windows-based tablet with all kinds of other gizmos attached. It needs something memorable. What about ?Tabsolutely Phabulets?? Hmm, it?s not quite torturous enough. Tablets used to be called ?slates?, before the MAN got his marketing team all up in its grill. There must be a compelling combination of all those words? of course! I have it. A term that accurately describes the upcoming Windows-based slate from Razer, which does everything a flat gamey thing does, but also more. And is black and shiny, and runs a full copy of Windows. Razer have named it the ?Razer Edge?, but I think from now on it shall be known as the ?Tabslatelutely Phabusl8te?. The ?8? is for Windows.

The heart of the Tabslatelutely Phabusl8te is a full Windows 8-toting Tabslatelutely Phabusl8te in a pair of configurations. The low-spec variant conceals a thousand dollar Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB RAM, and a 64GB SSD, while the Pro costs $1299 and is configured with an Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, and the choice of either a 128GB or 256GB SSD. Each has an Nvidia GT640M LE GPU powering a 10.1? 1200?800 touchscreen. It means that it?ll play PC games out of the box, which the beefier versions of Microsoft?s Surface can also do. It?s Razer?s additions that they hope will make it a better proposition for gamers.

They include a keyboard, for easily tweeting about how amazing it is to be typing on your Tabslatelutely Phabusl8te, and a dock that outputs USB, HDMI and sound. But most intriguing is the cradle with controllers at either side of the screen. You have analogue sticks and buttons to control games with. The controller is an astonishing $250 if sold separately, but there are bundles coming.

It can be seen here in the semi-wild, running Civ 5 and Dishonored.

There are two sides to this. It?s clearly a very powerful piece of tech. The notion of having a chunky tablet that can simply play my library without having to hunt down a cut-down port is very compelling, and it?s not actually ugly. Not even with the sticky-out controllers. I?d happily play games on it, and I?d expect those with a surfeit of strategy games would find it a lovely thing to use on a train. My current gaming laptop is bigger and weaker than the Tabslatelutely Phabusl8te, but then it was way cheaper as well. So what I?m saying is IWANTONEIWANTONEIWANTONEIWANTONE!

On the other side, it?s a big ask. Portable kit has long occupied the second-tier of gaming devices when it comes to PCs. The cost is up there with a very decent desktop and aside from the external peripherals, there?s no upgrade route. Laptops at least have expandable RAM. I?d also question it?s use a tablet: it?s really chunky, and doesn?t look like it would work as an e-reader or casual queue-enhancing device. It?s hardly pocket-sized, but at least it?s not this monstrosity. Not that I?d want to stand in a bank reading my Kindle library with something so expensive, but this is really a modular, powerful laptop, with a few tricks up its sleeve. And did you notice the careful evasion of the battery life question by the Razer CEO in that video?

I still want it, though. What say you?

Breaking News: Demand Media has acquired Names.com ...

Well for my first story on MorganLinton.com I can confirm that Domain name.com has been acquired by Demand Media.Name_Logo_

Demand Media will get to add Domain.com to their registrar holdings. I understand that Name.com will be allowed to operate as is keeping the unique culture that it has cultivated.

Congrats to Bill Mushkin who is a great guy imo, and let?s hope Domainnames.com stays the way it has been.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.?(BUSINESS WIRE)?Demand Media? (NYSE: DMD), a leading digital media company, today announced the acquisition of Denver-based Domain name.com, a domain names name registrar known for its strong retail footprint, award-winning customer service and creative spirit. The acquisition is intended to expand Demand Media?s platform as it prepares for the historic release of new Top Level Domains (TLDs) this year.

?Name.com brings innovation, creativity and a deep commitment to their customers ? factors which we believe are essential in the environment of new gTLDs.?

Founded in 2003, Domain name.com customers have registered nearly 1.5 million domainname, and use the company?s tools and services to grow their online presence. As the second largest registrar in the World, Demand Media?s eNom subsidiary has over 13.5 million domainname names on its platform registered by over 8,800 resellers and partners. ?Name.com will provide a direct channel for us to reach consumers and small businesses as they develop and manage their online identities,? said Richard Rosenblatt, chairman and CEO, Demand Media. ?This becomes even more valuable as over one thousand new domainnames extensions are expected to become available for registration in the years ahead.?

In 2011, ICANN initiated the process for creating new domain extensions as a way to increase domains name choices for memorable or descriptive web addresses (for example, integritymortgagesolutions.com can become integrity.mortgage or integritymortgage.solutions) and help organize websites and information better (for example, gwathmey-siegel.com could end in a domainname extension that maps to the nature of the business, such as .law, .architect or .cpa). Last June, ICANN announced it had received 1,930 applications for new TLDs that were submitted by entrepreneurs, businesses, governments and communities around the world looking to operate a TLD registry of their own choosing.

Demand Media will retain the Denver-based team and the business will report to Taryn Naidu, executive vice president, Registrar Services. ?Our strategy is to provide an end-to-end solution for all things domain names ? whether you are looking to consume or distribute names and services,? said Naidu. ?Name.com brings innovation, creativity and a deep commitment to their customers ? factors which we believe are essential in the environment of new gTLDs.?
