'Happy Feet Two' features inside joke on Pitt

Warner Bros.

Brad Pitt and Matt Damon voice Will and Bill the krills in "Happy Feet Two."

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

There's a hidden inside joke for followers of Brad Pitt's life and career in the new movie "Happy Feet Two," opening Friday.

Pitt and Matt Damon provide voices for two krill (named Will and Bill, rhymingly). The tiny shrimp-like crustaceans bounce all around the edges of the animated penguin movie, never really interacting with the fuzzy birds, but often sliding down their backs or clinging to their fur. For me, their desperate and entertaining?struggle to find the meaning of life at the bottom of the food chain?was one of the best parts of the movie.

In one scene, Damon's krill, Bill, tells Pitt's Will how much he longs for a large family.

Will's response could only have been written by a savvy screenwriter who's familiar with Pitt and Angelina Jolie's much-talked-about?six-children-and-counting family:?"I for one don't have the means to bring up so many kids."

From the disdainful tone Pitt gives the krill's voice, he's obviously in on the joke.

Look for our full?"Happy Feet" review Wednesday.

Will you see "Happy Feet Two"? Tell us in the comments.

Drinking Risky for Women With Family History of Breast Cancer: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Nov. 14 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking alcohol may be especially risky for young women who have a strong family history of breast cancer, including having mothers, grandmothers or aunts with the disease, a new study suggests.

Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis examined data on more than 9,000 girls, all daughters of nurses, from 1996 (when they were aged 9 to 15) through 2007.

They focused on 67 participants who were later diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 27 with benign breast disease, a large class of conditions that can cause breast lumps or pain and can be a risk factor for breast cancer.

The researchers found that women who have a family history of breast cancer or breast disease were about twice as likely to develop both benign breast disease and breast cancer than women with no family history of the disease.

Risk of benign breast disease rose along with how much alcohol the young women consumed, according to the study.

In young women with no family history of breast disease, alcohol consumption wasn't associated with an increased chance of benign breast disease.

The study is published in the Nov. 14 online issue of the journal Cancer.

It's possible that young women who are especially prone to develop breast cancer can reduce their risk of benign breast disease by avoiding alcohol, researchers said in a university news release.

"The most common question we hear from women with a family history of breast disease is: 'How can we prevent breast cancer in our daughters?'" said senior study author Dr. Graham Coldtiz, a professor of surgery. "This points to a strategy to lower risk -- or avoid increasing risk -- by limiting alcohol intake."

But Dr. Anees Chagpar, director of The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, questioned the findings, noting that the number of participants diagnosed with benign breast disease is small and the lack of required biopsies makes it hard to know whether many other women in the study also had the condition.

"Benign breast disease is a spectrum of changes -- from simple cysts and fibrocystic change, which do not significantly increase one's risk of developing breast cancer, all the way to atypical ductal hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ, which -- while not pre-malignant nor frankly cancerous -- impose a significant increased risk," Chagpar said.

"Many women have fibrocystic change which we've come to realize is really quite ubiquitous and part of the spectrum of 'normal,'" she said. "Patients with such simple cysts should be reassured, and while vigilance in terms of screening is always advisable, they also need to know that this does not increase their risk of cancer."

In the big picture, however, "we know that alcohol increases breast cancer risk," she said. The question, she said, is whether it does that by increasing the risk of benign breast disease.

"I do think at-risk individuals should exercise moderation in their alcohol consumption, since excessive alcohol is known to increase one's risk of breast cancer," she said.

A study in the Nov. 2 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association found that as few as three alcoholic drinks a month was associated with a slightly increased risk of breast cancer.

In that study, which looked at data on 106,000 women, women who drank the equivalent of three to six glasses of wine were 15 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than women who never or rarely drank. Women who consumed much more alcohol -- about two glasses of wine or the equivalent beer/liquor a day -- had a 51 percent increased chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer during nearly three decades of follow-up.

Obama caps summit diplomacy in Hawaiian home state (AP)

KAPOLEI, Hawaii ? President Barack Obama on Sunday tied the hopes of a faster American economic recovery to the booming Pacific Rim region, saying "we're not going to be able to put our folks back to work" unless the Asia-Pacific region is successful as an engine for the world.

"We consider it a top priority," Obama said of the region where his administration is pouring in time and political capital to expand exports and business ties.

The president spoke as he dove into a day of summit diplomacy, proudly using his home state of Hawaii as the American foothold to the Pacific. He gathered with leaders of 20 other nations of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, whose nations span from Chile to China and account for roughly half the world's trade and economic output.

In the midst of a hard re-election bid, Obama kept his message on jobs, even as he privately lobbied for help on containing the Iranian nuclear threat.

He was to cap the summit with a solo news conference in which topics on and off his scripted agenda were likely to emerge.

Born in Hawaii, Obama reveled in having the world stage on his home turf, while back east the Republicans seeking to oust him from the White House assailed his foreign policy record.

Obama used his moment to signal to business executives and Asian leaders that the United States has shifted from a post-9/11 war focus to re-engagement all across the Pacific.

"We represent close to 3 billion people, from different continents and cultures," Obama told his APEC partners on Saturday, ahead of some luau entertainment. "Our citizens have sent us here with a common task: to bring our economies closer together, to cooperate, to create jobs and prosperity that our people deserve so that they can provide for their families."

The president is on a 9-day venture away from Washington's daily political gridlock. He will visit Australia and Indonesia before returning to the White House on Nov. 20.

Obama met Sunday with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper after a joint meeting of those two leaders and Mexican President Felipe Calderon had to be canceled because of a helicopter crash that killed Mexico's top cabinet secretary. Handlers for Obama and Harper tried to make the most of the moment for the cameras, staging not one but two photo ops of Obama and Harper, first laughing while seated at a patio table, then strolling with their suit coats slung over their shoulders.

On Saturday, largely a day of sideline meetings here, Obama prodded the skeptical leaders of Russia and China for support in dialing back Iran's nuclear ambitions, but without winning endorsement from either man. Neither Russian President Dmitry Medvedev nor Chinese President Hu Jintao publicly echoed Obama's push for solidarity over Iran.

Obama did announce the broad outlines of an agreement to create a transpacific trade zone encompassing the United States and eight other nations before going into meetings with Hu and Medvedev where he raised a new report from the U.N. atomic agency. The report asserted in the strongest terms to date that Iran is conducting secret work to develop nuclear arms.

Russia and China remain a roadblock to the United States in its push to tighten international sanctions on Iran. Both are veto-wielding members of the U.N. Security Council and have shown no sign the new report will change their stand.

Alongside Medvedev, Obama said the two "reaffirmed our intention to work to shape a common response" on Iran.

Shortly after, Obama joined Hu, in a run of back-to-back diplomacy with the heads of two countries that have complicated and at times divisive relations with the United States, occasional partners in joint international endeavors, but also frequent rivals or adversaries on more difficult issues, especially those with strategic implications.

Obama said that he and the Chinese leader want to ensure that Iran abides by "international rules and norms."

Obama's comments were broad enough to portray a united front without yielding any clear indication of progress.

Medvedev, for his part, was largely silent on Iran during his remarks, merely acknowledging that the subject was discussed. Hu did not mention Iran at all.

White House aides insisted later that Russia and China remain unified with the United States and other allies in preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, and that Obama, Hu and Medvedev had agreed to work on the next steps. Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said the new allegations about Iran's programs demand an international response.

"I think the Russians and the Chinese understand that," he said. "We're going to be working with them to formulate that response."

As the president held forth on the world stage, Republicans vying to compete against Obama for the presidency unleashed withering criticism in a debate in South Carolina. It was a rare moment in which foreign policy garnered attention in a campaign dominated by the flagging U.S. economy.

"If we re-elect Barack Obama, Iran will have a nuclear weapon. And if you elect Mitt Romney, Iran will not have a nuclear weapon," said Romney, a former Massachusetts governor.

Iran has insisted its nuclear work is in the peaceful pursuit of energy and research, not weaponry.

On the Pacific trade pact, Obama said details must still be worked out, but said the goal was to complete the deal by next year.

The eight countries joining the U.S. in the zone would be Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Obama also spoke with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda about Japan's interest in joining the trade bloc.

All-out hunt for Nationals' Ramos

24-year-old catcher kidnapped after finishing his rookie season

By IAN JAMES and JORGE RUEDA

updated 5:27 p.m. ET Nov. 10, 2011

CARACAS, Venezuela - The government sent top investigators Thursday to hunt for Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos, whose abduction has shaken Venezuela's elite athletes and focused attention on the nation's sharp rise in kidnappings for ransom.

The 24-year-old player, who had returned to Venezuela after his rookie season, was just outside the front door at his home on Wednesday night when an SUV approached, armed men got out "and they took him away," said Ramos' agent, Gustavo Marcano.

It was the first known kidnapping of a Major League Baseball player in Venezuela, though the relatives of some ballplayers have previously been held captive for ransom.

Police found the kidnappers' vehicle abandoned in the nearby town of Bejuma on Thursday morning, Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said. He said anti-kidnapping units led by "the best investigators we have" were dispatched to the area in central Carabobo state.

He vowed to rescue Ramos and capture his abductors.

"We're taking on this investigation with everything we've got," El Aissami said.

Major League Baseball and the Nationals said the leagues' Department of Investigations was working with authorities.

"Our foremost concern is with Wilson Ramos and his family and our thoughts are with them at this time," the team and the MLB said in a joint statement, adding there would be no further comment.

Ramos was outside with his father and two brothers in their working-class neighborhood of Santa Ines on the outskirts of Valencia when the SUV pulled up with four men inside, three of whom got out and seized the player, Marcano said.

"The abductors haven't made contact with the family or with anyone," said Domingo Alvarez, vice president of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League. "We're worried."

Ramos is a key young player for the Nationals. As a rookie in 2011, he hit .267 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs in 113 games. He also threw out 19 of 67 runners attempting to steal a base, a 28 percent success rate that ranked third among qualifying catchers in the National League.

Washington acquired Ramos from the Minnesota Twins in a trade for All-Star relief pitcher Matt Capps in July 2010.

He is one of dozens of Venezuelans in professional baseball, and security while at home has increasingly become a concern for the players and their families as a rising wave of kidnappings has hit the wealthy as well as the middle class.

Venezuelan police said 618 kidnappings were reported in 2009, and the numbers have grown rapidly in recent years. In 1998, when President Hugo Chavez was elected, just 52 kidnappings were reported. Security experts say the real number of kidnappings today is much higher because many cases aren't reported to authorities.

The wealthy have taken steps to protect themselves. Sales of armored cars have soared in the past several years. Bodyguards typically shadow major leaguers when they return to their homeland to play in the winter league.

"Every major league player has his own security, but we don't know if he had his security there at that time," Alvarez said.

Former Boston Red Sox slugger Tony Armas, who lives in Venezuela, said young players have been taking additional security measures due to the risk of kidnappings.

"But many of them are careless sometimes. No one seriously thinks that this can happen to us, and much less in a country like ours where people love baseball," Armas said in a telephone interview.

"Most of us came from humble families. We still have relatives who live in poor areas; we frequent those places and unfortunately the criminals are getting more soulless all the time," he said.

In November 2009, the 56-year-old mother of Victor Zambrano, who retired after a seven-year Major League career, was rescued in a commando-style operation three days after she was kidnapped. The former pitcher's cousin, Richard Mendez Zambrano, had been kidnapped a few days earlier, and was later killed.

In June 2009, Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba's 11-year-old son and brother-in-law were kidnapped and released a day later.

The mother of former player Ugueth Urbina, who was a two-time All-Star pitcher, spent more than five months in captivity until she was rescued in early 2005.

Venezuela has one of Latin America's highest murder rates, and violent crime has worsened in recent years. As ransom kidnapping has soared, the government passed a revised law in 2009 that stiffened prison sentences for kidnapping and also allows authorities to freeze the banks accounts of victims' families to prevent them from paying ransom.

Ramos had been training and planned to start playing with his Venezuelan team next week. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Melvin Mora, also a Venezuelan, proposed that the Venezuelan league ought to call off its games "until he appears."

But league president Jose Grasso said that won't happen. "Turning out the stadium lights isn't a solution," Grasso said, calling Ramos' abduction "an isolated event."

Employers post most job openings in 3 years

(AP) ? Employers advertised more jobs in September than at any other point in the past three years. The increase suggests hiring could pick up in the next few months.

Competition for jobs is fierce. And many employers aren't rushing to fill some because they are worried about the strength of the economy.

Still, most economists say the increase in openings is a reassuring sign.

Nearly 3.4 million jobs were posted in September, the Labor Department said Tuesday. That's the most since August 2008, one month before the financial crisis intensified.

"Business confidence appears intact," said Alan Levenson, an economist at T. Rowe Price, "confirming ... that job growth is going to continue."

Job openings have rebounded from a decade low of 2.1 million in July 2009. But they are well below the 4.4 million advertised in December 2007, when the recession began.

Almost four years later, roughly 14 million people are unemployed. An average 4.2 unemployed workers were competing for each opening in September. That's slightly better than August, but it is still more than twice the 2 to 1 ratio that economists say is healthy.

More openings do not necessarily mean more jobs. Even though job openings rose 22 percent in the past year, hiring has increased only 10 percent, the Labor Department's report shows.

Education and health care providers have boosted their openings 21 percent in the past year. Yet hiring in those fields has dropped. Retail job openings have soared more than 40 percent in the past year, but hiring has been flat.

U.S. employers remain extremely cautious. Modest growth over the summer helped calm recession fears. But the growth came after consumers spent more while earning less, a trend that economists fear can't be sustained.

And the economy remains vulnerable to shocks. Europe's debt crisis could intensify and throw the continent into a recession, which would slow U.S. exports and reduce growth. U.S. lawmakers are expected to sharply cut federal spending, which could mean fewer government jobs and less consumer spending.

"When you have a lot of uncertainty, an employer may choose to postpone their hiring plans," said Henry Mo, an economist at Credit Suisse.

Some employers are likely pickier about who they hire than they have been in the past, economists say. They have more choices with unemployment near 9 percent for the past two years.

In some high-skill industries, such as engineering or information technology, companies could be having trouble finding workers with the right skills. Some economists say companies aren't offering high enough pay to attract workers they need or are unwilling to train applicants who aren't a precise fit.

The economy added 158,000 net jobs in September. Hiring slowed a bit in October, as employers added only 80,000 jobs, the fewest in four months. Even so, the unemployment rate dipped in October to a six-month low of 9 percent, from 9.1 percent, because more people said they found jobs.

And October may end up looking better if the government revises the job totals, as it did with the August and September figures.

The rise in openings suggests the year could end with even more hiring.

BP, partners: Bar spill reports from lawsuits

The companies involved in the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history are trying to prevent government investigations blaming them for the disaster from being used against them by the people and businesses who are suing them.

Billions of dollars are potentially at stake in a trial scheduled for February to determine whether rig owner Transocean can limit what it pays those making claims under maritime law and to assign percentages of fault to Transocean and other companies involved.

BP, Transocean and cement contractor Halliburton filed motions late Monday in federal court in New Orleans seeking to keep certain government oil spill reports out of the civil case. BP also wants a judge to bar plaintiffs' lawyers from using past criminal, civil and regulatory proceedings against the British firm in the civil case. The companies cited rules of evidence and other procedural issues.

The filings deal with the two most comprehensive federal investigations of the disaster. One that was issued in September by the U.S. Coast Guard and the agency that regulates offshore drilling concluded that BP bears ultimate responsibility for the disaster. The other report by the presidential oil spill commission blamed the blowout on a series of failures involving all the players.

There was no immediate ruling.

Meanwhile, the Coast Guard approved a plan to end the cleanup along the Gulf Coast, a move that officials said opens a new phase of work for BP: restoring damage areas.

According to a document obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday, the plan "provides the mechanisms for ceasing active clean-up operations."? In it, the Coast Guard spells out protocol for ending the cleanup. It has been going on since April 20, 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon exploded off the Louisiana coast.

About the lawsuit request, U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., a ranking member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, scolded the companies. He noted that the CEOs of the three companies recently refused to appear before his committee to testify about the findings in the Coast Guard-Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement report.

"Whether it's Congress or courtrooms, these companies are trying to whitewash away this dark period in our nation's environmental history. It's not enough for BP, Halliburton and Transocean to avoid talking to Congress about these oil spill reports, they don't want anyone in the courts talking about them either," Markey said in a statement Tuesday.

Story: Obama to expand oil, gas drilling off Alaska and in Gulf

The Deepwater Horizon explosion in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana in April 2010 killed 11 rig workers and led to more than 200 million gallons of oil spewing from a well a mile beneath the sea. The well was capped three months later, but not before hundreds of miles of coastline were stained, seafood and tourism businesses were devastated, and a fragile ecosystem was damaged.

BP PLC, which owned the well and was leasing the rig from Transocean Ltd., has already spent or committed tens of billions of dollars to clean up the oil and compensate victims. It is at risk of having to pay out billions more depending on the outcome of the civil trial involving hundreds of lawsuits. Government fines and penalties also could add significant liability.

Cain troubles loom over Wednesday's GOP debate (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The economy is supposed to be the focus when Republican presidential contenders share a debate stage for the first time since allegations of sexual impropriety rocked Republican Herman Cain's presidential bid.

But as the candidates gather Wednesday night in ailing Michigan, Cain's troubles are certain to loom large over the Oakland University debate hall ? whether or not the rivals address the accusations directly during the two-hour face off.

With voting in the GOP nomination race set to begin in fewer than 60 days, Republican officials and presidential contenders alike are growing increasingly frustrated that the political conversation has been hijacked by the furor surrounding Cain.

"Only Herman Cain can address the issues before him. In the meantime it's sucking all the oxygen out of the room, depriving the people of this country from a conversation about the issues that really do matter," Republican contender and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman told The Associated Press Tuesday. "That's the price we pay when these things happen."

Like the rest of Cain's opponents, Huntsman did not call for him to leave the presidential contest or rush to his defense, illustrating the sensitivity ? and the unpredictability ? of the escalating situation. In a multi-candidate field, there's no guarantee that one candidate's demise will be any single candidate's gain.

Even so, some of Cain rivals ? namely fellow conservatives who are struggling to gain ground against better-known, better-funded rivals ? sense an opportunity to steal support away from the former businessman should he implode after recently emerging as the strongest challenger to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in some polls. At the same time, Romney's steady-as-it-goes campaign ? focused primarily on the general election and President Barack Obama ? could benefit from an extended distraction as the political attacks are focused elsewhere.

Romney is considered the man to beat in the evolving Republican contest to face Obama next fall.

The other candidates have had mixed success jockeying to emerge as the Romney alternative for several months. It looked as if Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann was rising earlier in the summer, but she faded after the brief rise of Texas Gov. Rick Perry. After Perry stumbled through recent debates, Cain took his place near the top of many early state polls and national surveys. With Cain's political future now uncertain, some see potential in former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has a history of personal problems as well.

"The more chaos and distractions there are in the rest of the field, the better it is for Mitt Romney," said GOP strategist Todd Harris, who is not aligned with any presidential campaign. "While the political world's attention has been shifting around from Bachmann to Perry to Cain to Gingrich, Romney has been slowly and methodically putting a campaign together that's built to last."

The candidates, Romney included, publicly said they would like to steer the conversation back to substantive issues.

In an interview with ABC News and Yahoo! News, the former Massachusetts governor targeted Obama and his stewardship of the economy.

"The last thing this president and his team want to do is to talk about their record," Romney said. "They failed."

Yet he also called the allegations against Cain "particularly disturbing."

"These are serious allegations and they're going to have to be addressed," Romney said.

Sharon Bialek, a former National Restaurant Association employee, accused Cain this week of unwanted sexual advances more than a decade ago on a night they met to discuss her job prospects. She is the fourth woman to allege sexual impropriety, but the first to speak publicly.

"I don't even know who this lady is," Cain told ABC and Yahoo! "It's a distraction from the things we ought to talk about, which is this economy, energy independence, cutting spending, as well as getting this country back on track."

Still, even when the candidates seemingly try to stay focused on the issues, the hot topic of the day always seems to pop up.

On Saturday, Gingrich and Cain met near Houston to debate policy issues.

The event was designed to be exclusively on the economy but, toward the end, Gingrich lobbed an easy question to his rival: What had surprised him most about running for president?

Without hesitation, Cain used the opportunity to launch into a tirade about the media ? a frequent punching bag usually excites the Republican electorate. Cain didn't explicitly mention the sexual harassment allegations and the media's covering of it, but the context was clear.

Later, Gingrich refused to comment on the allegations, saying only: "I'm glad to talk about policy."

Beyond Cain's struggles, there are substantive issues to discuss Wednesday, the first time the rivals were squaring off in more than three weeks.

Romney last week released a detailed plan to cut federal spending by $500 billion in his term as president. He would strip federal subsidies from Amtrak and deeply cut the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Romney would also fundamentally re-shape Medicare by introducing a voucher system, or "premium supports," to the popular health insurance program for the elderly.

His spending strategy drew sharp criticism from Perry's campaign last week. And other candidates, like Texas Rep. Ron Paul, favor far deeper cuts. With the Cain distraction, however, it remains to be seen whether Romney's opponents can quickly and effectively resurrect what had been an increasingly aggressive line of attack against him.

Michigan Republicans, meanwhile, fear they will lose an opportunity to call attention to their state's economic problems.

"It is a distraction for what could be a very good press day for Michigan and Michigan Republicans," said Saul Anuzis, a Michigan-based member of the National Republican Committee. "I think it's in every candidate's interests to stay focused on the issues."

The celebration in New York City, hinted at last week as a ?big, big surprise?, kicked off around noon at Herald Square,? close to the Empire State Building. The Big Windows Phone event featured live performances and digital entertainment which was projected onto the LED screens that made up the mock Windows Phone 7 user interface. There were Plants vs Zombies and Fruit Ninjas performances, demonstrations, music and even an impromptu marriage proposal. Everyone that bought a phone was gbig windows phone 2ive a $25 prepaid card for the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Along with the official announcement of the four new phones by Microsoft?s Andy Lees, Spotify announced that its service would finally be available for the Windows Phone 7. The Windows Phone touted the ability to browse and play friend?s playlists, top track and artists; play music and change tracks while the phone is locked or while running other apps; and pin playlists as Live titles on the Start screen for easy access. The Spotify app was promised to be available for download later on today.

There?s no word on how long the big Windows phone will stay up, though there?s been some whisper that it might be taken down tonight. If you?re in NYC check out while/if you still can; if you can?t make it you?ll have to console yourself with this video the Windows team blog released of the supersized marketing stunt being constructed. Funny how 6 stories looks like 3 on camera.

Lady Gaga To Host Thanksgiving Special

Singer will perform eight songs on ABC's 'A Very Gaga Thanksgiving' on November 24.

It's going to be "A Very Gaga Thanksgiving." No, that's not some joke about your Aunt Frannie showing up in a turkey dress for the annual family gathering. It's the actual name of the 90-minute prime-time Lady Gaga Thanksgiving special that will air on ABC on November 24.

The show, which will team Gaga with veteran TV news announcer Katie Couric, was, of course, conceived and directed by Mother Monster herself and will feature the singer performing eight songs in front of a small audience of her friends and family, according to a press release announcing the show. Couric will also sit down for an interview in which she asks Gaga about the inspiration for some of her songs as the two chat at Gaga's New York alma mater, Sacred Heart Catholic School.

"We all know Lady Gaga is a phenomenon," Couric said in a statement. "This is a chance to see more of who she is beneath the wild costumes and staged musical numbers ... Lady Gaga as a high school student still bruised by being excluded from the party, Lady Gaga as a devoted daughter and caring sister, Lady Gaga as a 25-year-old woman embracing fame and fortune that seemed to come overnight. She will impress you, delight you and surprise you."

In addition to her new single, "Marry the Night," and other songs from Born This Way ("You and I," "The Edge of Glory"), Gaga will perform "White Christmas" and her duet with Tony Bennett, "The Lady Is a Tramp." Chef Art Smith will also drop in to share some recipes on the special, including his holiday classic, deep-fried turkey and waffles.

The always busy Mother Monster has other plans cooking up this month. She'll hit the U.K. "X Factor" for a performance on Sunday, November 13, where'll also sing "Marry the Night."

Obama: Details needed on Europe bailout plan (AP)

CANNES, France ? With much at stake for the United States, President Barack Obama said Thursday that the most important task for world leaders gathered at an economic summit in France was to resolve the European financial crisis.

He said that the European Union had taken important steps toward a solution, but "we're going to have to flesh out more of the details about how the plan will be fully and decisively implemented."

Speaking alongside French President Nicolas Sarkozy after the two met privately on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit of leading world economies, Obama said they discussed developments in Greece "and how we can work to help resolve that situation." Greece is in political upheaval after the prime minister shocked Europe by calling for a popular vote on the European bailout plan. But after meeting for about an hour with Sarkozy Obama didn't give any details on what the U.S. might do in concert with its European allies.

"The United States will continue to be a partner with the Europeans to resolve these challenges," Obama said.

At a later meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Obama added, "We are now, having seen some progress, looking forward to working together to figure out how we can implement this in an effective way, to make sure that not only is the eurozone stable but the world financial system is stable as well."

Sarkozy said after meeting with Obama that "We're trying to build the unity of the G-20." He said the top issue is economic stability, "in particular the issue of the Greek crisis"

Sarkozy also said that he and Obama agree that businesses should contribute to resolving the global financial crisis.

Sarkozy said the pair "found a common analysis to make the financial world contribute" to finding a solution. He did not elaborate, but said he welcomed Obama's "understanding on subjects such as a tax on financial activities."

Sarkozy and some others in Europe have been pushing for a small tax on all financial transactions that could be used to help poor nations and reduce debts. The Obama administration is cool to the idea, favoring instead fees on the biggest banks.

As the global economic meeting was getting under way at this seaside resort, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou was facing a revolt in Athens over his surprise planned referendum on the country's hard-won international bailout package. Facing calls to step down, he convened a cabinet session for later in the day and was facing a confidence vote on Friday. Papandreou's move infuriated European leaders and rocked financial markets worldwide, jeopardizing the long-sought deal to resolve Europe's debt crisis.

The situation poses several risks for the U.S. and Obama. If Europe can't contain the crisis in Greece, it could spread across the continent and hit U.S. shores just as the weak U.S. economy has begun to show some positive signs of growth. With unemployment stuck at 9.1 percent, any adverse economic event in Europe could stall the U.S. recovery, causing further pain and hurting Obama's own re-election prospects.

Obama has been a key player at past Group of 20 summits. But his role in these two days of meetings, his fifth G-20, was overshadowed by the situation in Europe even before he arrived in Nice Thursday morning after flying overnight from Washington.

While not exactly a bystander, Obama brought few tools with which to help the Europeans.

White House officials have been consistent in placing the burden for a solution on European leaders, asserting that they have the resources to solve the problem and do it swiftly. White House spokesman Jay Carney said the U.S. could offer unique insights from the 2008 financial crisis on Wall Street and the steps taken to avert disaster.

"The United States, obviously, has a great deal of influence, because of who we are and the role we play in the global economy, and globally in general," he said Wednesday. "I would not discount the significance of the experience that we have in terms of its usefulness to the Europeans."

Carney added: "It's very important that the Europeans take the conclusive action that's necessary to deal with this crisis, obviously for their own sake, but we're ? our interest is not entirely altruistic. It's also because we are a very important part of the global economy, and it affects our economy."

Beyond the threat of contagion from the crisis, the European emergency could affect the U.S. by altering geopolitical balances. China is considering helping Europe build a $1.4 trillion bailout fund that would protect Italy and Spain in the event of a Greek default.

The U.S. is in no position to offer such financial assistance while participation by China would expand its influence in Europe, potentially at the expense of the U.S.

"European preoccupation with the euro crisis could dash all American hope for trans-Atlantic cooperation in coping with China," Bruce Stokes, a senior economics fellow at the German Marshall Fund said in written testimony for a U.S. Senate committee hearing.

Stokes said Beijing is showing strength in the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, is extending its influence in Pakistan, Africa and Latin America, and is developing a brand of Chinese state capitalism that many around the world are finding to be more attractive that what is in place in Europe and even the United States.

"Washington will be hard pressed to counter this Chinese influence on its own. And we could find ourselves without an effective European partner," Stokes said.

But Carney rejected the idea that Obama was going into the summit in a position of weakness.

"The United States is still the largest economy in the world. It is still the most powerful nation in terms of its alliances and its influence around the world. And that influence comes in a variety of ways, including the wealth of experience that we have," Carney said. "But the focus here is not on whether or not the Chinese involve themselves financially. I mean, that really is a sideshow to the focus here. The focus here is a European problem that requires a European solution."

Reconstitute Dried Mushrooms with a French Press [Kitchen Hacks]

Reconstitute Dried Mushrooms with a French Press French presses make delicious cups of coffee and tea, but they're also handy kitchen gadgets with other uses. For example, to reconstitute dried mushrooms, just partially fill your press, drop in the mushrooms, and put the press down on them so they're fully submerged. Come back later and you'll have full, plump mushrooms.

Sure, you could just put some water in a bowl and toss the mushrooms in, but they tend to reconstitute unevenly and pop up to the surface, leading to mushrooms that are tender in some places and tough others. America's Test Kitchen suggests that if you have a press with a glass carafe, wash it out well and give your mushrooms a soak with the plunger down over them, so they don't pop up to the surface. When you come back, they'll be fully, evenly reconstituted and ready for cooking.

Remember to wash your French press well beforehand: you don't want your mushrooms to absorb any coffee flavor. We know this can't be the only way to keep dried mushrooms underwater while soaking. Do you have a different method, or will you give this a shot? Let us know in the comments.

Frank McCourt selling Dodgers. Who might be buying?

Frank McCourt, the troubled owner of the L.A. Dodgers, has agreed to put the team up for auction. Who will buy the team from Frank McCourt?

If you?re a billionaire shopping around for a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, this is your lucky day. Late Tuesday, embattled Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt agreed with the league to start the process to sell his team.

The move puts an end to a financially tumultuous two years for Mr. McCourt and the Dodgers. ?Earlier in the year, the league charged McCourt with ?looting? $189 million in unauthorized team revenue for personal use. The ball club was forced to file for bankruptcy in June after MLB commissioner Bud Selig rejected a 17-year,? $3 billion TV contract with FOX that McCourt needed to keep the team afloat. That meant the team was unable to make its $30 million end-of-month payroll.

McCourt also just settled a costly divorce with his wife, Jamie, who will walk away with $130 million after a two-year legal battle that cost an estimated $35 million in legal fees.

So the sale was all but essential for the financially stretched McCourt, who bought the Dodgers organization for? $430 million in 2004. The team, surrounding properties (parking lost, stadium, etc.), and media rights are expected to fetch between $800 billion and $1.2 billion this time around.

But who can pony up that kind of cash to buy to Dodgers? Several people, it turns out. Here are the names of six potential owners making the rounds right now:

Mark Cuban

The polarizing owner of the NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks told the Los Angeles Times Tuesday that he would be interested in buying the Dodgers ? if the price came down a bit.

?At the right price, I?m interested,? Mr. Cuban told the newspaper. ?Not if the price is over $1 billion.? This isn?t Cuban?s first attempt at breaking into the MLB: In 2010, he tried to buy the Texas Rangers at a bankruptcy auction, but was beaten out by a group of investors led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan. The Rangers went for $600 million, which is about half of the Dodgers? potential asking price. In 2008, Cuban bid $1.3 billion for the Chicago Cubs, but the MLB rejected him.

?You can?t ever count Cuban out,? said ESPN analyst Jerry Crasnick, on ESPN?s Sports Center on Wednesday. ?but I?ve always thought baseball was a little bit wary of Mark Cuban. He?s not sort of the old-boy-network type.?

Dennis Gilbert

Mr. Gilbert, a popular retired sports agent based in Los Angeles, has been in the conversation to buy the Dodgers for as long as there has been a conversation. In his agent days, Gilbert negotiated huge contracts for players like Jose Canseco and Barry Bonds.? He is well-liked and highly respected in sports circles, and already a fixture at Dodgers? games. He?s also a Los Angeles native and a lifelong Dodgers fan, a quality that Dodgers? fans may be looking for after 7-1/2 tumultuous years under McCourt, an East Coast outsider.

Gilbert has served as an adviser to the Chicago White Sox management, and he led an investor group that nearly bought the Texas Rangers in 2009.

Mark Attanasio

Mr. Attanasio has been the owner of the Milwaukee Brewers since 2005, and, by most accounts, he is pretty happy there. The Brewers have thrived since Attanasio purchased them from Bud Selig for $223 million. They went an even .500 in Attanasio?s first year at the helm, their best season since 1992. This year, they made it to the National League championship series. Attanasio has adamantly denied rumors that he is interested in the Dodgers, but he?s a longtime Los Angeles resident who still works as an executive at an L.A. based money management firm, and Dodgers? fans can?t help but dream of having such a nice a guy as their team?s owner.

Ron Burkle

Mr. Burkle is a billionaire investment magnate and co-owner of the NHL?s Pittsburgh Penguins, and he expressed interest in the Dodgers months before they came up for sale. According to the LA Times, Burkle was rumored to have been approached by Jamie McCourt to buy out her husband?s stake in the team. In April, reports surfaced that the California native was part of an investment group assembled by Steve Garvey, the popular 1970s Dodgers catcher, but Burkle is not officially linked with Mr. Garvey just yet.

Alan Casden

Mr. Casden, a real estate billionaire who lives in Beverly Hills, tried to buy the Dodgers in 2004, but he was beat out by McCourt. Now that the team is back on the market, he may be interested once again.? Back in 2003, Casden said he would build a new stadium for the Dodgers in downtown L.A. once he became owner. Would he have the same plans if he won the team this time around?

Magic Johnson

The L.A. Lakers basketball legend owns a stake in a minor league ball team, and he has sung the praises of the Dodgers brand in interviews. ?If the Dodgers ever came up for sale, would I take a look at it with some other people? Of course you would look at it,? Mr. Johnson said at an L.A. Times forum in August.? Johnson sold his stake in the Lakers last year, and has since been rumored to be interested in owning another NBA team, or bringing an NFL team back to Los Angeles. Nothing came of those rumors, but maybe the Dodgers one will stick.?

Twitter Stories tell 140-character tales that tug at your heartstrings (Yahoo! News)

Hidden among the avalanche of Twitter's retweets and trending topics there are, on occasion, 140-character gold nuggets: cultural and historical moments captured in time on the social network. In a new project called Twitter Stories, the social network will mine its vast stock of tweets for these hidden gems.

The project?launched with an initial series of tales that'll pique your interest and show you that the site can be used for purposes beyond?venting frustrations. Among the first 14 stories compiled is the tale of Aaron Durand who used Twitter (and burritos) to promote his mother's ailing bookstore business, as well as that of a man who found a kidney donor by tweeting that he needed one.

Did you know that football player Chad Ochocinco invites some of his fans to dinner gatherings through Twitter every year? And on the other side of the world in Japan, fishermen use the site to sell their catch before they even make it to shore. In the project, Twitter?looks back at the first ever tweet made from space by Mike Massimino in 2009 ? astronauts (and space-based robots) have since used the site to communicate directly with the general public on Earth.

"Each story reminds us of the humanity behind Tweets that make the world smaller," the company says. The site plans to publish a collection of stories every month, and welcomes compelling tales from everyone! To submit yours, take a relevant photo or video and tweet it along with your tale and a mention of @twitterstories or append a #twitterstories hashtag.

Demi Lovato 'Totally Different' One Year After Treatment

'I've grown up a lot, and I've overcome a lot,' singer tells MTV News.
By Christina Garibaldi

Tuesday (November 1) marks one year since Demi Lovato left her tour with the Jonas Brothers to enter a treatment center to deal with emotional and physical issues. Fast-forward one year later, and it's hard for even Lovato to recognize the person she once was. The former Disney starlet recently sat down with MTV News to talk about overcoming her struggles and becoming a role model for young teens.

"I feel like I'm a totally different person today, and I've grown up a lot, and I've overcome a lot, so I'm excited about where I am in my life today," Lovato said.

Even though Lovato is in a good place now, that doesn't mean her road to recovery was an easy one. The "Skyscraper" singer revealed the best piece of advice that helped her get through hard times.

"The best piece of advice is to fake it till you make it," Lovato said. "When I first went into treatment, I didn't want to be there, and I was kind of like, 'I'll just fake it until I make it.' I stayed in there, and I started believing that I was in there for the right reasons. And even though I didn't want to be there at the time, some girls might not want to get help, but if they fake it till they make it, hopefully they can get the help that they need, and they can start to believe it, and they can actually see one day that it's actually the right thing that they're doing."

Since leaving treatment in January, Lovato has talked candidly about her battle with eating disorders and self-mutilation, becoming a role model to young teens that might struggle with the same issues — a job Lovato takes very seriously.

"I do feel a responsibility, but it's not a burden to me," Lovato said. "I feel like there are certain choices in my life that I am faced with every single day, and I think, well, 'How would my little sister feel if I would do this? And how would she feel about this?'

"I have days where I'm cranky, but I definitely want to be there for my fans and step outside and shake their hands and be there for them too, because I'm now a role model, and I want to be there for them."

So, what is the best piece of advice Lovato can give her fans? "I would say: Speak up, and don't be afraid to get help, because it could save their lives."

Lovato has seen much success over this past year. In June, she dropped her first single, "Skyscraper," off her third album, Unbroken. She is getting back on the road this month for a mini-tour and planning a 2012 world tour. Yet, with so much on her plate, Lovato is making it a point to strike a comfortable balance between work and the rest of her life.

"I work because I love doing it, so it's hard to draw that line," she admitted. "It's hard to say 'I need to stop' when I love doing what I do, but it's important to find time for myself and 'me' time, so I make sure that I find that."

Thomson Reuters CEO eyes 2013 for reorganization benefits (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Thomson Reuters Corp Chief Executive Tom Glocer, under pressure from the board to improve the company's performance, said it may take until 2013 for the benefits of a recent reorganization to fully kick in.

"We're not magicians," Glocer said in an interview after the company reported a higher-than-expected rise in third-quarter profit and revenue.

The news and data provider said in September it would merge its strongly performing Professional division, serving mainly lawyers and accountants, with its struggling Markets business, which targets banks and other financial institutions.

"We expect the benefit of these changes will improve sales performance in 2012 and benefit 2013 revenue growth," Glocer said in a statement accompanying the earnings release.

Thomson Reuters shares were down 1.4 percent in New York and up 0.4 percent in Toronto in a generally weaker market.

"What is clear at this point is that 2012 will not look particularly good," said Claudio Aspesi, an analyst at Sanford Bernstein & Co in London.

"Things are going to get worse before they get better... even 2013 is a statement of optimistic faith in a recovery."

Glocer is under pressure from the board and the controlling shareholder, Canada's Thomson family, to increase its market share, particularly for its financial industry products. Sources familiar with the board's thinking said in July that he had about a year to make that happen.

As part of the shakeup, Jim Smith, the former head of the Professional division, was elevated to the new role of chief operating officer in September, putting him in a strong position to succeed Glocer.

MARGINS IMPROVE

Thomson Reuters reaffirmed its outlook for 2011 as its margins improved. Still, the Markets division, which accounts for about 58 percent of overall revenue, posted revenue growth of just 1 percent as banks continued to slash jobs and costs.

The company has also been hurt by the slow uptake of its new Eikon desktop product for traders and analysts.

Thomson Reuters said it had sold or migrated 32,000 Eikon desktops by the end of September, up from 28,000 three months earlier.

Adding to the thousands of job cuts in the banking industry over the past year, Credit Suisse said on Tuesday it would eliminate another 1,500 positions as it scales back its investment banking business.

"I think the sentiment heading into the quarter was pretty negative and these results were better than what people were expecting," said an analyst at a major Canadian bank. "Some investors thought the 2011 guidance would be cut."

Glocer said conditions remained tough in the financial markets, where competitors include Bloomberg LLC, New Corp's Dow Jones division and Factset Research.

"But That's not a good enough excuse as various competitors were still able to grow their businesses," he said in a memo to staff. The company would grow by driving sales in fast-growing markets and taking share in slower ones, he said.

Thomson Reuters reported third-quarter revenue of $3.26 billion, up 5 percent before currency changes. Analysts had expected $3.23 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue in the Professional division, which accounts for 42 percent of overall revenue, increased 10 percent after growing 8 percent in the second quarter. The 1 percent revenue growth in the Markets division was unchanged from the second quarter.

The company said the Professional division, which competes with Reed Elsevier's LexisNexis and products from Wolters Kluwer, has sold WestlawNext to more than 29,000 customers since it was launched in February 2010 and now represented 46 percent of Westlaw's revenue base.

Overall adjusted earnings per share rose to 56 cents from 45 cents in the same quarter last year. Analysts had expected earnings of 53 cents per share.

Thomson Reuters said it still expects revenue to grow by a mid-single-digit percentage rate in 2011.

The company's underlying operating margin improved to 22.0 percent, from 21.2 percent a year earlier.
